At Support Staff Australasia we pride ourselves on being able to develop successful, long term solutions to recruitment and retention issues being experienced by various industries and professions.

Many employers have experienced problems recruiting and retaining skilled workers. The Support Staff International Division was conceived in response to these needs and has developed into a successful facet of our company.

Two projects included in the success of the International Division resulted from our Aged Care division identifying the shortage of Registered and Enrolled Nurses in the Aged Care Sector.

Initiatives to respond to the Nursing skills shortage comprised of two strategic approaches: The International Nursing Students Program and The Federal Government Labour Agreement submission.

Labour Agreement

In 2008 we submitted an application to the Federal Government for a Labour Agreement. The submission proposed that we recruit 50 Registered Nurses from overseas.

Lengthy negotiations with the Federal Government and ensuring we met the rigourous criteria needed, resulted in our Labour Agreement being approved in February this year. This will allow us to recruit experienced Registered and Enrolled Nurses from overseas countries.

Nursing Students Program

Practicing as a Registered Nurse in a new country is a challenging transition for anyone to make particularly if the approach to health care in Australia is very different from the home country. The International Nursing Student program has been developed to assist the international student to understand health care in the Australian context.

The student who has already undertaken undergraduate studies in China completes the final year of their Chinese Studies in Australia while simultaneously completing an Australian Nationally recognised qualification.

The clinical placement component of this project will provide the international student with exposure to both Aged Care and Acute Care sector. The additional benefit to the student is the opportunity to work (subject to VISA restrictions) in the health care sector while completing their studies.

Excellent pastoral care, additional English support as well as clinical placement support is provided by practicing experienced Registered Nurses, throughout the 12 month course.

Cultural Landscaping

At Support Staff, we offer our international nursing students a Cultural Landscaping Program headed by our International and Team Manager, Kristy. We believe it is important to look after the whole person and not just deal with the work side of their experience in Australia.

We take them to the Adelaide Zoo, the Monarto Zoo, the Central Market, our beaches and attend ANF BBQs with them so they can socialise with our other international students.
